Quantum cascade lasers are innovative coherent light sources in the mid-infrared wavelength region. The mid-infrared is of particular importance especially for gas sensing and spectroscopy applications, because the fundamental vibrational modes of gas molecules occur in this spectral range. These SLDs combine the broad spectral width of a light emitting diode with the high output power of a laser diode. SLDs are of particular interest as light sources in fiber gyroscopes or for medical applications as for example for low coherence tomography. The spectral width of the light emission is relatively broad (-10dB width > 100nm) with low spectral ripples. In continuous wave operation the output power of the SLDs at room temperature is several mW. On special request SLDs with emission wavelength between 760nm up to 2400nm can be provided.
