为了保持光纤的机械强度和损耗的长时间稳定,而在玻璃表面涂装碳化硅(SiC)、碳化钛(TiC)、碳(C)等无机材料,用来防止从外部来的水和氢的扩散所制造的光纤(HCF:HermeticallyCoated Fiber)。目前,通用的是在化学气相沉积(CVD)法生产过程中,用碳层高速堆积来实现充分密封效应。这种碳涂覆光纤(CCF)能有效地截断光纤与外界氢分子的侵入。据报道它在室温的 氢气环境中可维持20年不增加损耗。当然,它在防止水分侵入延缓机械强度的疲劳进程,其疲劳系数(Fatigue Parameter)可达200以上。所以,HCF被应用于严酷环境中要求可靠性高的系统,例如海底光缆就是一例。
